When one thinks of Wisconsin, they certainly do not think of bird watching. Actually Wisconsin is one of the best areas in the country to bird watch. In the Horicon Marsh, located in the Southeastern section, there is the largest migration of Canadian Geese in the world. Not only has this area been referred to as the Everglades of the North, but you can also see more than 275 species of birds here. Reported sightings include while pelicans, egrets and herons.

On Wisconsin-s western border, sits approximately 261 miles of a National Wildlife Refuge. This particular area has been noted to have more than 300 types of birds. Here you can see whopping cranes, turkey vultures, grouse, golden eagles, swans, woodpeckers, spotted herons and many more. Many birdwatchers come here to view the hard-to-find golden eagles, flying in their natural environment.

Chequamegon National Forest, has been home to around 225 species of birds. Here one can view osprey, Indigo buntings, rufous-sided towhees, ruby crowned kinglets and migrating tundra swans. This area hosts over 200 miles of trails for exquisite bird watching. Wisconsin’s own bayou is the Crex Meadows Wildlife Area. This marsh has woodlands and prairies and makes for great wildlife. Watch the sharp-tailed grouse, double-crested cormorants,nesting herons and breeding osprey. With over 30,000 acres to explore, one is sure to have a few sightings of birds.

While this is just a few of the areas to explore in Wisconsin, there are many more. Even a beginner will have luck with a sighting, in this overpopulated areas. Wisconsin has its share of rare and unique birds, which call this state home. It is clear to see why so many bird watchers use these areas to exercise their hobby. The next time one is in the area, they should drive through Wisconsin and see nature in all of its glory.
